Piccadilly Puppets receives Target grant for performances in Atlanta Public Schools

Atlanta (November 2012) – The Target Foundation has awarded a $2,000 grant to Atlanta’s Piccadilly Puppets Company (PPC). The grant is funding free puppetry performances in five Atlanta Public Elementary schools. The funds came from the foundation’s Arts, Culture & Design in Schools Grant program.

The educational shows include Butterfly Ballad, the story of a caterpillar that earns his wings, and Cherokee Tales, which imparts Native American myths and legends. The performances either have been or will be staged at elementary schools including Kimberly, Garden Hills, Whitefoord and Dobbs this month. A show is planned for a fifth Atlanta school at a later date. The Woodruff Arts Center Young Audiences program arranges school performances for Piccadilly Puppets.

“Education is an important part of our mission, so this grant helps us bring our performances to a wider audience,” said PPC Artistic Director Nancy Riggs.

Started in 1969, The Piccadilly Puppets Company is a non-profit touring puppet theater dedicated to providing puppetry experiences of highly artistic quality to young audiences of ethnically and culturally diverse populations. It has performed at festivals across the U.S. and the world. It shares a wide variety of subject areas with enthusiastic audiences, and constantly experiments with new puppetry and story-telling techniques.

Thank you to Fulton County Arts and Culture

Piccadilly Puppets receives funding from the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, through the guidance of the Fulton County Arts Council. Fulton County is the leading public funder for the arts in the State of Georgia. Our grant from the Fulton County Arts Council supplements our main source of income, which is the fees we charge for performances. This enables us to hire skilled, professional puppeteers and pay them a competitive wage, while still keeping our prices affordable to most groups. We can also give back to the community through occasional discounted or even free performances. Through the application and review process and final reports, the arts council also helps us to set goals, to meet artistic standards, to be financially responsible, and to be held accountable for the way we spent the funds at the end of each year. These grants benefit not only our organization, but more importantly YOU, as our audience. Please join us in thanking the Board of Commissioners and the Arts Council. If you live in Fulton and enjoy the arts, please let your Commissioner know!

October is National Arts and Humanities Month

Presidential Proclamation — National Arts and Humanities Month, 2012 | The White House

“When children read their first book, pick up their first instrument, or perform in their first play, they demonstrate the power of the arts to ignite wonder and imagination. This month, let us pledge to invest in America’s next generation by ensuring our children have the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the arts and humanities. If we give them the tools to create and innovate, they will do their part to disrupt our views, challenge our perceptions, and stir us to be our best selves.”

Piccadilly Puppets invites you to not only participate in the Arts this month, but to help a child to participate as well. Take a child to a show, give them art supplies, enroll them in dance class, book a puppet show for a group of children!
